GeoRadar - GPS Compass Place Finder NextJS

Description

GeoRadar turns a phone into a geographic radar. Point it in any direction and instantly see what lies there — cities, villages, mountains & peaks, rivers, lakes, islands, countries and landmarks — with live distance, bearing and cardinal direction.

All data comes from OpenStreetMap via the Overpass API: no API key, no database, no accounts, no paid services. Clone, npm install, deploy on HTTPS and you are live.

Highlights

  • Compass with 8-way cardinals, heading smoothing and accuracy indicator
  • Radar view — you at the center, places as dots, a lit cone for where you look
  • Optional camera view with place labels over the live camera (privacy-first)
  • Map view (Leaflet + OpenStreetMap) with heading cone and a line to the selected place
  • 8 place categories, multi-select, remembered between visits
  • Adjustable radius (10-500 km) and field of view (20/40/70 degrees)
  • Manual location and manual compass fallbacks
  • Light & dark theme, fully responsive, clean English UI
  • Privacy-first: your location is only used for the anonymous Overpass query

Built with Next.js 16, React 19, TypeScript (strict), Tailwind CSS v4, Leaflet and lucide-react. Clean, commented, production-grade code.

Included: full source code, documentation (install, deploy, customize, FAQ) and an on-device HTTPS test proxy. Map data (c) OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL) — attribution built in.
